English Dub Review: Boogiepop and Others Overdrive: “The King of Distortion 1”

Distortion pedals FTW!

Overview (Spoilers Below)

The late Teratsuki Kyouichirou had created a building called “Moon Temple” that is now open for business and accepting legions of people. For what purpose? It’s not made entirely clear at this juncture, but it doesn’t matter because someone closes the doors before all of the lines finish getting in. While inside, everyone comes in contact with an omnipresence known as the King of Distortion who greets you in the form of whatever person is most important in your life. Fortunately, Boogiepop shows up in the nick of time, but even she doesn’t think she’s up to the task of defeating the King.

Our Take

There’s almost no premise to every episode of this series, but like Boogiepop, I love going from week to week not knowing what the hell is going on because the story itself is so strong that the eventual culmination almost feels something like out of the MCU universe because it’s like multiple hours of finally getting to the whole point of the matter with the hope of a satisfactory conclusion. Don’t worry though, Boogiepop and Others has all of the crazy shit to keep you goth kids content week after week with its emo broad strokes brushed across its characters that are dealing with heartbreak, disappointment, and grief, all in one fell swoop.
