“Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection” hits US Theaters this May!

Okay, Japan, you’re gonna lose your semicolon privileges if you’re not careful.

Yesterday, Funimation announced plans for a theatrical release the upcoming sequel(?) to the popular 2006-2008 mecha series Code Geass, titled “Lelouch of the Re;surrection”. Along with the reveal of a new poster showing the return of the show’s core cast, they also revealed release dates for the subtitled version on film on May 5, while the dubbed version will play through May 7-8. No word on which members of the original dub’s cast will be returning as of now.

For those unfamiliar, Code Geass is a story set in an alternate timeline where an exiled prince named Lelouch as he fights against his former homeland by rallying rebels in an occupied Japan with the help of a mysterious immortal girl named C.C. The series was a massive hit in its time, being produced by studio Sunrise Inc. (known for the Gundam franchise) and combining hard-hitting mecha action with fantasy elements and Death Note-esque mental warfare.

Originally billed as a follow-up to the final episode of the series’ second season, that description has become unclear as of late with the recent release of three movies (which Funimation will be releasing in March) which recut footage from the show and rework certain key plot points. Knowing that, it’s uncertain whether “Re;surrection” is a sequel to the series or these films. Regardless, look forward to our upcoming review when this film releases in May.
