English Dub Review: Island “We Meet Again”

Did somebody say “jailbait”?

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS BELOW)

We start this brand new show with a minor having se…what?! That escalated way to fast. And it doesn’t stop there. The next sequence of scenes ended up with another minor with her face on a dude nude’s crotch.

We found that the nudist name is Setsuna, who can’t remember anything till that point in time with one exception: he is a time travel and he has come to prevent some sort of major tragedy from occurring. Or so he says because we don’t have proof or context to his claims.

The Crotch Facing Loli is Karen, tsundere extraordinaire who tried and failed to escape the island, Urashima, where the story is set. The Silent Beauty Loli is Rinne, who also have some sort of vampiric problem and is adverse to sunlight. She also has some sort of mysterious backstory from 5 years ago and looks suspiciously similar to the minor in the sex skip at the beginning. And finally, we met Sara, the Shrine Loli, who is smart  and clumsy at the same time, and who wants to kill the MC, in more ways than one if you catch my drift, due to the connection that she forms between Setsuna’s time travel circumstances and Rinne’s incident 5 years ago.

OUR TAKE

After the first five minutes, I decided to pause for a second and asked myself the eternal question: WHY?

Let’s start with how generic and standard the whole concept is, and given its source in the eroge Visual Novel world, that is saying something. The characters are all cardboard cut, bland and so stereotypical that it hurts. If this is supposed to be character driven, then things can only go downhill, and the plot itself is not better either. I mean, the concept on its own can be ground for some really interesting ideas (I am a sucker for time travel tales) but it was so badly introduced that it made me cry. Also, the “mysteries”, a.k.a episodic plot points, are nothing to write home about and I cannot fathom how things can improve from here.

The animation production, as well as the music score, are O.K. but more at the below average side. This shows should have been something somehow popular ten years ago, during the Moe Era, but even then I doubt its chances at popularity. Now, I think that this will go so heinously wrong that I am kind of curious in how it will end. Something like a trainwreck; everybody knows how things will end but keep watching anyways due to morbid curiosity.
