Review: Craig of the Creek “The Future is Cardboard”

Is it?

Overview (Possible Spoilers Below)

Craig, Kelsey, and JP meet an eccentric Cardboard Creator named “Carter Brown” (Voiced by Zeno Robinson) who invites Craig to help finish his cardboard masterpiece, but as the plot progresses, Kelsey & JP learn that nothing is what it seems with Carter’s vision…

Our Take

Uh… Wow! that was ridiculously awesome! You get a sense that there’s something under-handed about Carter when he invites Craig to his so-called cardboard kingdom, but it’s approached with subtlety & tension as Kelsey & JP slowly feel a genuine sense of unease about Carter’s place, as it’s hinted that he may have ulterior motives.

From a creative & artistic standpoint, Craig & Carter’s cardboard creations are quite impressive in terms of scale and imagination. I especially liked the attention to detail with the interior of Carter’s Cardboard mansion with the fake arcade machines while impractical, were fun to look at.

You gotta give massive props to the writers and art-design for how much effort was put into each of the rooms within the mansion, including near the end when Craig realizes what Carter really wanted him to build. There were moments of genuine drama between Craig & Kelsey when Kelsey at one point, is unable to appreciate his vision, but near the end of the episode, it’s Craig who learns the lesson that it’s more fun to build & create with the people you matter to.

Overall, “The Future is Cardboard” introduces potential recurring characters for future episodes, along with further expanding the show’s universe with the big reveal of another location within the Creek. Also, points to the writers for that huge RoboCop reference near the end too.
