Review: Adventure Time “Temple of Mars”

Weirdness in space.

Overview:

In order to find Jake, Finn and Jermaine travel to Mars to curry help from Normal Man.

Our Take:

Normal Man, now King Man, has figured out a way to get back Jake- but they can’t do it alone. Betty is also on Mars, attempting to be cured of her madness by undertaking a great task. Her penance is long and will likely never be finished, but doing so will likely calm her down. By helping out Finn and Jermaine, it will allow her a bit of a distraction, but also use her mind for some good.

While searching for Jake, they encounter a segment from Betty’s past. It’s unclear whether this segment is real or not, but it shows Betty before she met Simon and got mixed up in all the problems that came with the crown. Regardless of its authenticity, it represents a Betty that could have lived a normal life, one free from magic, but also free from the person she cares about most. It’s freedom in all senses, both good and bad.

Past Betty does offer some temptation as well, and says that the two of them could work together to help fix Simon, and Betty does consider it. It’s only through Finn’s insistence that Betty reluctantly decides to change her mind. She uses her magic to change Past Betty’s trip to the day of, which means she’d never get to meet Simon. It’s by no means an easy choice, but it shows that Betty acknowledges that some part of her, deep down, could have been freed from this mess.

Of course, it turns out Betty hasn’t been cured at all. One of Betty’s core traits is her absolute determination, and she probably won’t stop at what this new plan is. Judging from King Man’s reaction, it’s definitely something extreme, and can’t be good.
