English Dub Review: Lupin the Third Part IV “World Dissection, Part 2”

It’s ironic that there are two Leonardos in this review…see if you can spot the second one.

Overview (Spoilers Below)

It’s the finale! And Lupin kills off Leonardo DaVinci after saving Rebecca’s mind and then the minds of everyone in Italy by replacing memories of Leo with that of the master thief. As a result, Lupin has to take off because now all of Italy is pissed off at him. Before he leaves, Rebecca lets Lupin know that she plans to take his surname despite the fact that she may not see Lupin for a very long time.

Our Take

The first 15 minutes of this week’s episode is the movie Inception. Everything from Lupin introducing a token (the ring) that helps snap Rebecca out of her state of mind to Leo/Lupin implanting “seeds” of memories that, when awake, could cause a reaction in a non-dream state, and lastly when Lupin kills himself in the dream world to wake him and everyone else in Italy up. So, the Lupin finale loses a bunch of points for unoriginality.

The second half of the episode was just tying up the loose ends of a strong Lupin the Third Part IV. Rebecca and Lupin say goodbye and everyone goes their separate ways. We’ll get into the future of the Lupin franchise in our season review, but a Part V is certainly welcome, so long as this excellent cast is the proper Lupin cast.
