Review: The Jellies “Pilot”

Wait…now you air the pilot?

Overview (Spoilers Below)

For some reason, Adult Swim is airing the “Pilot” episode of The Jellies after the network has aired a couple of episodes. In it, Cornell learns that he’s been adopted and wants to go on a journey to figure out who his parents are. After a few misfires that take him all over town, he ends up on The Jerry Show where he’s greeted by the Jellies and is told that regardless if he’s adopted or not, he’s still loved. Then, Mrs. Jelly decides to get into a fight with an audience member.

Our Take

This episode should’ve aired at the beginning of the season because it would’ve set up better the next couple of episodes that already could’ve aired. That said, I think the episode helps right the ship after last week’s cover song of the Golf Wang App, but, I actually found myself liking the original “Pilot” better because it was a bit more unpredictable and out of control, the Adult Swim-aired “Pilot” episode was a bit more ordinary in its execution.

This episode does a few things that are important, however, For starters, we get a way better introduction to the Jellies’ neighbor, and the walking-talking whale, “Mervin”, whom might actually be funnier in Adult Swim’s The Jellies than in the Golf Wang App version because he walks a bit slower and his gay tendencies are a bit more salacious. But in the original series, I think I preferred seeing Mr. Jellies’ journey in looking for his son and proving to him that he’s loved versus Cornell looking to discover his real parents but the climax of the episode at Jerry was very close to showcasing the producers taking crazy turns for the worse and ramping up the violence, but I’m sensing a bit more of the show being held back in that department in favor of storytelling, which is fine, but there’s a reason why this show is 12 minutes and is on Adult Swim…WE WANT CRAZY!
