English Dub Review: Black Clover “The Path to the Wizard King”

It’s not an easy one.

Overview (Spoilers Below)

Asta, Yuno, and the other hopefuls finish up with the entrance exam at the end of which one of the squads have to select you if you’re gonna wanna get in. In this instance, Yuno gets to pick his poison as he was selected by all of the groups so he opts to join the Golden Dawn. Asta, on the other hand, has to convince Yami of the Black Bull Squad to take him of which the Destruction God does just that, but not before Asta’s first round adversary tries to take him down a peg. Fortunately, Yuno steps in with the save.

Our Take

As cool as Yuno’s battle was, he’s not as compelling a character as Asta is, which probably explains why the producers sort of blew through him and the other battles. This episode sets up forthcoming arcs that will kick off the long journey for both fighters moving forward, but Asta’s near poisoning shows that there’s definitely going to be some pitfalls along the way so it will be interesting to see how both combatants fare moving forward. Clearly, the producers were cognizant as to show the viewers that Asta’s gonna need to work a lot harder to get where he wants to whereas Yuno is a clear favorite and should have a less challenging path.
