English Dub Review: New Game! “Make Sure You Buy It!”

Don’t buy this one.

Overview (Spoilers Below)

After a panel in which she brings up Aoba to give her proper credit where credit is due, we begin to get the fallout of Ko deciding to leave Eagle Jump to go to a new French studio. At first, it seems like a pretty typical sendoff from a company that actually likes her, employers support her decision and will bring her back if she decides to rejoin the team and the rest of the staff takes part in both a farewell party and a game release party. But, when Ko is just about to take off for good, the entire staff wishes her well but not before we find out Momiji had officially become part of Eagle Jump. Peco releases and it’s a hit which means Aoba now has to begin working on a “New Game”.

Our Take

The finale had about as much emotional semblance as a bag of potatoes. We’ll go through this in further detail on the season review, but New Game does a whole lot of complaining about things that don’t need to be complained about. “Slice of Life” this ain’t because none of premise is a decent reflection on real-life software dev (doesn’t matter if it’s gaming or not). If Aoba had left Eagle Jump, I could see us fawning over that because she’s the character we’ve grown with for two seasons, but Ko?….meh.
