English Dub Review: Kenka Bancho Otome -Girl Beats Boys “ Alas! Such Kind Fists…”

A lot happens in this latest episode of Kenka Bancho Otome -Girl Beats Boys. However, the show really feels like its already protracted runtime is getting shorter.

Hikaru aka Hinako. She goes back the orphanage one last time and chatted with the director. A boy from Hinako’s past that she called “big brother.” It turns out this is Kira Runtarou, the head of the second year class. Kira remembers Hinako from the orphanage.

It’s a neat twist. As the series progressed, threats to Hinako’s identity persisted. But this is the first major event in that sub plot. Earlier, punk idol Yuta posited that Hinako was really a girl and not Hikaru.

But for its plot development, “Alas! Such Kind Fists…” feels pretty anticlimactic. Rather, the episode comes across as fairly short and uneventful. Still, I like the characters. I’d prefer a bit more time devoted to character development and introduction. Notably, Kira’s intro is decidedly rushed. Overall, it’s a series that like its protagonist, continues to come out swinging each week. Just some weeks, like this, it’s a swing and a miss.
