English Dub Review: Seven Mortal Sins “Driven Wild By Envy”

All the demons get into the pool!

Another day, another excuse to confusingly search up Seven Mortal Sins but mostly get Seven Deadly Sins results on Google. It really just amazes me how unbelievably tone deaf the show becomes as it spins wildly from vague exposition to tits and ass without really any transition in between. But oddly enough, unlike the pilot episode where that stark difference in tone made me want to bash my head into a wall, episode 2 throws the story in such a different direction it’s hilariously mockable.

For a recap thus far, the fallen angel turned demon lord Lucifer has been cast from heaven to hell by god and just as quickly the lords of hell, the Seven Mortal Sins, kick her out of hell and into the human world during Lucifer’s failed attempt to usurp control. So along with the mortal sin of Envy and Lucifer’s personal drooling molester (barely remember her or the other Mortal Sins name’s as apart from accent they feel interchangeable so will name them by the sin they represent) Envy, they end up in the human realm and land smack dab in front of a Christian school girl named Maria. This in turned lands Maria at the end of Lucifer’s spear, having her heart ripped out. But having one’s heart ripped out by a demon doesn’t kill the poor little Maria, she instead is dragged along by Lucifer to a penthouse suite where she and Envy strip her to have fun splashing around time and eat food from hell.

Correct me if I am wrong but the last episode ended with an admittedly poorly choreographed fight scene where Lucifer was beaten senseless and cursed with a red hand censor curse and now we go from action fan service to just full blown fan service. It honestly was a lot more tolerable then I thought it was going to be the second time around. Maybe because it was just doing everything so unashamedly over the top sexy and perverted it made the quasi more grandiose context and the literal refusal to explain the circumstances as to why Maria is in this situation more humorous than irritating.

The pilot episode lost me pretty quickly thanks to the stiff voice acting and very distracting accents. Not to mention the pilot episode was really trying to steamroll through the plot elements to get to more demon nipple licking and fingering so the expositional dialogue came off completely unnatural and frustrating to listen to. The second episode has similar issues but not to such an extent because it swaps that with every back and forth being a repeat of just asking the question why did we bring Maria along? And Lucifer answering either because I do what I want or you don’t need to know. I understand that we are trying to build up intrigue as Maria’s angel magic forms or whatever the twist involving her will be. However, it’s literally every other line where Lucifer, Maria and Envy’s dialogue is that exact back and forth.

It’s not fun to listen to. It’s repetitive and dull. I am glad though they took an initial idea that was presented in such a messy and uninvolved way like in the pilot but then decided to turn the fanservice up to 11 in the next episode. It doesn’t really add anything to help me think that the show is anything other than a poorly written titty shake show but it’s definitely feeling more tongue and cheek aware of itself which helps take the edge off the obvious fan service component. It hasn’t reached a point where I’d recommend the show as good because it is not. But I can more clearly see what can appeal to the fanservice crowd. Thankfully for those fans, they got the majority of the plot out in the first episode so now it’s off to Miami apparently for the next adventures of Lucifer, Envy, and Maria as Maria will undoubtedly be horribly violated again and again. This time it was by water tentacles. If you like the sound of that or find joy in mocking these sorts of shows go wild.
