Review: Steven Universe “Steven’s Dream”

Steven falls asleep while watching a science fiction movie with Greg. His father doesn’t want to wake him at first but, when Steven starts crying, Greg gets worried and wakes his son. However, Steven has no idea why he was crying. He did dream but the dream wasn’t particularly sad.

The next day, Connie shows Steven a borrowed library book that shows the building from Steven’s dream. Steven brings the book to the Gems. Amethyst doesn’t know anything, Pearl gets upset, and Garnet refuses to tell Steven anything. Since the Gems won’t help, Steven turns to Greg for help. It turns out the building is in Korea so Greg gets his cousin, Andy, to fly them there. Steven and Greg go a few touristy things before heading over to the strange building.

When they get to the spot, Steven finds a building that is similar to the one in his dream. However, this one is blue and whole while the one in his dream was pink and broken. The pink building is nearby. In front of it stands a large being covered by a blanket, crying. Steven figures out that this is why he can’t stop crying. He is feeling this being’s feelings. Even though Steven and Greg are hiding behind a bush, they are discovered by a Pearl. Not Steven’s Pearl but a Pearl nonetheless. She tells this being, that she calls My Diamond, about the humans. Greg goes to talk to her, leaving Steven hidden. Greg talks to Blue Diamond about her feelings and she is surprised that a human would understand at all. Blue Diamond tells him there is a geo-weapon incubating on the planet that will destroy everything. In an attempt to save one last piece of Pink Diamond’s legacy, she takes Greg back to her spaceship and into space. Steven attempts to save his father but fails. Garnet shows up just after Blue Diamond’s ship departs. She promises to take Steven to space to save Greg.

While the show has already been renewed for a fifth season, this episode feels like the beginning of the end. The Gems have talked about the Diamonds but we have never really seen them. And now Blue Diamond shows up on Earth? And tells Greg about a weapon that will destroy the planet? How long do the Gems have to save both Greg and the Earth? Will they be able to defeat Blue Diamond? How about Yellow Diamond? When will she show up? So. Many. Questions.
