Shorts Review: RWBY Chibi Episode 24 (Season 1 Finale)
This episode was 6 mins and 54 seconds long with zero promo ads.
“The one with a laugh track”
(Note: this was a 1-skit episode and it’s structured in a sitcom-like format accompanied by laugh-tracks hence the title.)
The skit begins with a everyone saying “Ah-hem” demanding somebody to say something since they’re supposedly before a “live studio audience”.
Ruby blindly thinks it’s a cold and Blake encourages her to study in the library. Weiss prefers to study in her room but Yang points out that this is “all of their room”.
Weiss questions what she’s doing with binoculars and Yang claims there’s a boy’s “Shower room” at a window across from theirs and Weiss in her own tame words thinks it’s bullshit. 😛 (Ya know, I would’ve expected this kind of behavior from teen boys in dated teen-sex comedies from the 80’s.)
Weiss’s curiosity is aroused to the point that she swipes Yang’s Binoculars and discovers she was not only telling the truth but someone’s about to go in the shower.
Yang takes back the binoculars and much to her disgust, the guy who went into the shower is their teacher Professor Port. (which thankfully doesn’t show nudity but simply their reactions) and Yang screams that it “made her blind”.
And just when Weiss says “Today couldn’t possibly get worse”, Jaune jumps in saying “Helloooo Team RWBY!!”
In typical, predictable, cliched, sitcom fashion, Jaune proceed’s to ask Weiss to the dance and gets shot down because the writers love to gleefully beat that dead-horse since season 2. Their exchange is also accompanied with Ruby breaking the 4th wall and interrupting between Weiss and saying random catchphrases like “Swing and a miss!”.
Jaune asks Yang why she’s hanging near the window with Binoculars (Valid question since earlier she was horrified seeing one of her male teachers naked) and it cuts to a series of fake commercials shown in a purple-screened backdrop for some reason.
The first commercial is a fun little callback to a fictional cereal that Phyrra was the mascot for called “Pumpkin Pete’s” which makes sense given her celebrity status within the school she was in.
You can also tell the delivery of Phyrra’s lines & vocal tone in this commercial sound cringe-worthy and feels more forced than Sara Lance’s bisexuality. 😛
She takes a bite while attempting not to lose her cool much to her personal disgust since it was briefly mentioned in RWBY Season 1 that Phyrra didn’t think the cereal was healthy but she did acknowledge that it gave her Wheaties Box Status.
It then cuts to another random commercial, this time with Roman and Neo, these two douche-monkey’s always bring a smile on my face for some reason. 🙂 Roman promotes a fictional “Neopolitan” ice cream called “Neo’s Neo”. (Get it?) and Neo hold’s the ice cream much to her deadpan Daria-like Annoyance.
Roman tries to assure people this ice cream isn’t poison only for a random narrator giving a “disclaimer” saying in his own words that it isn’t “Remnant Food Bureau” approved but it comedically ends with Neo holding a sign up also saying it’s not. 😛
It cuts back from the two commercials and now we have Cinder’s teen brigade and team RWBY sharing the same space together.
In between laugh-tracks they talk about a successful Dance and out of nowhere Sun appears. Sun proceeds to Interact with Blake asking to take her to a Dance.
Despite Blake saying yes, Neptune shows up saying they need to spend “Guy-time” and sounding borderline effeminate while stating his case on spending time with him.
Neptune drags his ass away from Blake not taking no for an answer (Way to cock-block him, genius!)
Yang proceed’s to cheer her up and Weiss points out that Team JNPR is supposed to show up with a cake.
Weiss points out that she told Nora to bring cake, much to Ruby & Yang’s shock.
Neptune notices for some reason the exit covered in pancakes of all things. (I’m starting to have flashbacks of when Deadpool made pancakes.)
Neptune ends up being toppled by the pancake mess and Nora dances around saying “You said you wanted cake Weiss but you didn’t say what kind!”.
The entire sitcom schtick ends with Ruby spouting her unintentional catchphrase/meme It’s also a gun! when Ren asks to borrow their scythe to cut up this pancake mess.
As Ruby thanx the cast and audience the camera spins around revealing that the entire audience is shadow people.
Ruby then finally gives a huge thank you to the people behind the camera and everyone is literally here. (Including the shopkeeper who’s dressed like a Grimm.) And the episode fully ends with Ruby saying “We’ll see you next Season!”
(As in a season 2 of Chibi? I’m game as long as they deliver more legit laughs next season.)
Overview
I can’t say I’m a fan of laugh track sitcoms but I did grow up enjoying Married with Children at a young age, but even though this was a parody, it was played a bit too straight for me to really enjoy it. “All our jokes are predictable and our delivery is played up, ha” isn’t really my variety of humor. I did like the gag where the audience was all those bizarre shadow people, though.
I was expecting more characters to show up like Penny, Qrow, Winter, Velvet, Ozpin, Adam etc. But great episode to conclude the season.
RWBY Vol.4 comes next and all I can say is “Here comes the Angst”.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
