What the hell is Matt Groening doing with Netflix?

 

Variety is reporting that Simpsons/Futurama creator Matt Groening is in talks with Netflix to develop a new animated comedy that would get a 20 episode order up front.

Other than that, there’s not a lot known about this project. Netflix has been doing a pretty great job in developing adult animated comedies like BoJack Horseman and F is for Family, and Matt Groening is the godfather of the industry.

And even more interesting, Matt is obviously the most profound name to try and work on a project other than The Simpsons which could signal a near end of the franchise. Hank Azaria is the lead voice for Bordertown, and every day we hear about former producers from the show working on new projects. Certainly after the Harry Shearer scare, people associated with The Simpsons are thinking outside the box.
