Review: Fugget About It “Jimmy Gets Goosed”

SPOILERS BELOW

Fugget About It follows the life of former mob boss, Jimmy Falcone. When Jimmy finds out that the mob wants to whack his Uncle Cheech, Jimmy whacks his boss and prosecutes against members of his mob. Now Jimmy Falcone lives by a new name, Jimmy MacDougal. He along with his family have been placed in witness protection. Their new home? Regina, Saskatchewan.

Despite the best efforts of people, staying on the straight and narrow can sometimes be difficult. This is especially true is society already expects the worst from you, because now you’re working to show you’re a good person and swim the upstream battle that is public perception. That’s the battle Jimmy fights this week on Fugget About It when he’s placed in anger management by his boss. He tries his best to prove himself, but circumstances (Cheech) keep getting in the way. Cheech begins to date Greta, meanwhile McCool enrolls Gina in a Scared Straight program and the local prison.

After a strong outing last week when the family visited Cuba, Fugget About It missed the mark this week. Jimmy is a character you often can’t help but sympathize with. While he may be an insane former mob member, you can often pick up on his good intentions. This episode did an excellent job of highlighting what makes Jimmy the character he is. He wants to be good, he believes he’s doing good, but things or people get in the way.

Cheech proved to be Jimmy’s greatest obstacle this week, as well as a big obstacle for the episode. In the first act of the episode his antics were entertaining, much more repetitive in the second act, but at least finishing strong in the third. Cheech is an interesting character in the sense that he represents chaos in Jimmy’s life. He’s the reason Jimmy is in Canada, and he’s the reason is having a tough time this episode. It seems life would be easier without Uncle Cheech around, but this circles us back to the kind of character that Jimmy is. A good guy. He loves his Uncle Cheech, despite constantly messing things up. He can be overbearing at times, in this episode especially. The only character worse than Cheech this episode would probably be his romantic interest, Greta, who is just a personified fart joke. Toby was a great character this episode. You think you know what you’re getting with him, but you start to realize that there are layers to him.

Fans of the show know Gina is a cute little girl who can hang with the adults. Of the three kids, she is the most entrenched in mob culture. She truly is her father’s daughter. Being a character who can hang with the adults presents limitations for her character. We’ve seen her be intellectually superior to adults in the past, she also possesses more attitude than any other character. So bringing her to a prison may have seemed like a funny idea, but it made for some predictable story telling. What would have made this particular story interesting would be if she were actually knocked down a peg or two. Instead she controls the situation like she controls every situation. There is plenty of witty dialogue between the characters, but a predictable story kept this from standing out in the episode.

Overall, not the best outing we’ve seen for Fugget About It. Jimmy’s story provided interesting twists and turns and funny writing, but a few poorly handled characters dragged the episode down. Great use of other characters though. It’s split. Gina’s story also had that funny dialogue you can expect from her, but was ultimately dragged down by a story you could map out just by knowing what kind of character Gina is.
