BUBBLE CAN Review: Night Sweats “Fantastico”

78085-young-justice-young-justiceChris and Bart have a fantastic new sponsor, Fantastico! More shorts from World Doctors, Crack Duck, Don’t Feed the Humans, and Executioner & Friend.

The live action segments of each episode were once the weakest part of Night Sweats. Coming across as loud and obnoxious at times, it was difficult to watch sometimes. In more recent episodes the energy hasn’t exactly been toned down, but it’s seemed more digestible. Perhaps the live action segments are an acquired taste? In any case, they are now one of the most fun parts about the episode because despite being live action, Chris and Bart do a great job throwing themselves into random situations that match the craziness of any cartoon you’ll see.

The first cartoon is World Doctors. This week our doctor duo go for a helicopter ride, but a series of unfortunate events lead to the helicopter going down. This short was great. While still not being my favorite short on Night Sweats, World Doctors has grown on me a bit. The quick paced banter and odd animations combine for a weird viewing experience. The extremely convenient end would be a con for any other cartoon, but World Doctors has reached the point where a normal ending would be out of the norm.

This week Crack Duck was equally insane and heart wrenching. Crack Duck adopts a baby he finds in a dumpster. The baby has an obsession with trying to feed from Crack Duck’s nipple, and the obsession quickly escalates. The escalation of the obsession was so strange, yet sed. Crack Duck just wants to do well by this baby, even if it means giving up everything. Crack Duck is easily the strangest Night Sweats short, and that is saying something because they’re all a little out there.

Don’t Feed the Humans was pretty weak this week. Horf introduces a new formula into the human’s food that have bad side effects and a dark secret, so the humans go on a hunger strike. This episode was mostly the humans sitting around in silence. It was probably as interesting as watching an actual hunger strike.

Finally, Executioner & Friend was alright. Executioner has an upcoming lobotomy, but is missing one of his torture tools. He and Friend go on a search to find it. Funny dialogue, but the story wasn’t very engaging.

Overall, not a bad episode. I really enjoyed half of the animated shorts and the live actions segments were great. If you’re just discovering Night Sweats and aren’t into it, watch a few more episodes. The appeal is found in repetitive viewings.
