Review: Star Wars Rebels – “Blood Sisters”

This week we are given another episode that doesn’t feature Ezra. Instead, Sabine is front and center. Hera gives her a mission to retrieve a mysterious courier. Ezra and Chopper are sent with Sabine as back up. But all they have is a secret phrase that only the courier knows. Well, it turns out that the courier is an old droid. As the group begins to retrieve the droid, they are cornered by Ketsu Onyo, an old friend of Sabine’s. They were bounty hunters together. Suddenly, the group is attacked by stormtroopers. Chopper manages to get the courier droid onto a nearby shuttle. However, Sabine is forced to take off in the shuttle before Ezra can get on board. And Ketsu follows in her own ship.

When Ketsu attacks the shuttle, one of the space locks bursts open and Chopper is blasted into space. Luckily, Sabine manages to get the hatch shut before she and the courier droid are also rocketed out. During his little trip outside, Chopper takes the time to head over to Ketsu’s ship and dismantle the weapons array. Chopper tries to blast his way back to Sabine’s shuttle but Ketsu captures him before he can make it inside the ship.

Sabine and Ketsu meet up to discuss their situation. Ketsu wants the courier droid because she can make a lot of money off it; Sabine wants Chopper back and refuses to give up the droid. Before they can reach an agreement, an Imperial ship shows up, looking for the stolen shuttle. Sabine buys them some time with an overloaded hyperdrive. Her plan is to blow up the shuttle and get away in Ketsu’s ship. But the Imperial ship starts shooting at the shuttle before they can finish the work needed to get everything ready. Sabine gets knocked out in the process. At first, Ketsu tries to leave Sabine behind but Chopper convinces her to go back for the Rebel. The Empire grabs both ships in it’s tractor beam but then the shuttle explodes, freeing Ketsu’s ship. The group jumps into hyperspace, leaving the Imperial ship far behind.

Finishing her mission, Sabine gives the courier droid to R2-D2. Hera congratulates them on a mission well done. She also offers Ketsu a chance to join the Rebels. During her conversation with Sabine, Ketsu turns the offer down but promises to think about it in the future. Sabine thanks her old friend for not leaving her behind. Perhaps we will see more of Ketsu in the future.

It was interesting to see a little bit of back story for Sabine, for once. We barely know anything about her beyond the fact that she likes to blow things up and paint everything. Now we know that she used to be a bounty hunter. I wonder if that past will come back to bite her in the ass. I’m sure she has more than a few enemies thanks to her former career. I’d also like to see more of Ketsu. It might be nice to have another kickass girl on their team. If she does return, I hope they give her a larger role than the one poor Rex has. He barely gets more than a cameo nowadays. But there are still plenty of episodes to come. Maybe we’ll see more of the side characters in the future. Then again, the past two episodes have been very light on the Jedi side of things. They will definitely need to get back into the spotlight. I hope there will be some great episodes coming up.
