Review: Harvey Beaks “Yampions”

Spoilers Below

The Beaks family plus Fee and Foo sit down to play a board game all about being yam farmers. Harvey teams with his dad to take on his mom, Fee, and Foo and for the most part, Harvey and his mom are the only ones who really take the game THAT seriously. Everyone else is kinda just there for the social element. This upsets Harvey because his dad is just trying to have fun and he’s not playing the game to win and is, in effect, destroying the team. In an effort to try and save face, Harvey tries to lie and make it so he is off his dad’s team which really just CRUSHES Irving’s feelings because he just wanted to spend time with his son. Harvey comes to grips, stays with his dad, and everyone just has fun for the rest of the evening…as fun as it can possibly be in being a yam farmer.

Our Take

I’m with everyone else, a game about yam farmers sounds awful, but kudos to the producers for making the game sound so difficult that I’m sure it was tough for viewers to even get it. This helps us feel for Irving more when he gets upset about his son’s betrayal, and it works. Ordinarily, every episode is about rooting for Harvey, this time around you can’t help but be really disappointed in him. Fortunately, this show is built on happy endings, and just like a good board game, it passes the time without even realizing it.
