Review: Fugget About It “Confetti Deathblow”

Being yourself isn’t always easy. If who you are doesn’t fit within the parameters of what is deemed normal, you could be subjected to ridicule and bullying. Those are the kinds of issues that were looked at on last night’s Fugget About It, only don’t expect it to be the after school special I may have just made it sound like. And how was the episode? Read on to find out!

In “Confetti Deathblow” Cookie thinks Petey is gay after a misunderstanding, but her thoughts are mistaken. Meanwhile, Jimmy and Cheech are attacked while on a fishing trip.

This was an alright episode. Probably my least favorite of the season thus far. It wasn’t a terrible episode, there were just a few things didn’t work for me. The episode started off very on a high note. The set up of the stories were clever and fun and engaging, but the episode lost it’s edge as things went on. Cookie discovering Petey isn’t gay didn’t feel right at that point in the story. Things were going so well when there was this giant misunderstanding in the house. After the truth came out of the closet (thanks, I’m here all week), the story just became what we may have expected at the start of the episode. It felt like taking something great, not finishing it, and starting over and taking the predictable path.

Jimmy and Cheech’s story also fell short for me. If you saw the episode, you know it was a parody of Captain Phillips and Somalian pirates in general. Perhaps a year ago this story would have had more weight behind it, but the comparisons between Somalian pirates and the ones we think of in pop culture have been done to death. Taking into account how long episodes take to make, the Captain Phillips references were probably more relevant during the early days of production of this episode, but I feel like the ship has sailed on Somalian pirate jokes (still here all week).

On a positive note, there was still plenty to enjoy in this episode. The first act was great. Very well written, a lot of great character interaction. It was just a fun watch. McCool was also great in this episode for the times that he was there. He never seems to disappoint me.

Overall, not the best episode, but they can’ all be home-runs, right? I’ve enjoyed the season a lot up until this point and odds are Fugget About It will come back strong next week. This show thrives with it’s great characters. Pop culture references just don’t work as well. It would be kind of like seeing the show parody Caitlyn Jenner in it’s next season. It would be pretty relevant topic now, but a year from now who knows what will be relevant? They could probably start a Donald Trump episode and it will still probably be relevant in a year.

So how did you like Confetti Deathblow? Like it? Not so much? Be sure to share your thoughts!
