Review: Adventure Time “Bonnie & Neddy”
SPOILERS
Cartoon Network made the over four-month wait for Adventure Time’s seventh season worthwhile. Well, not yet, but they probably will. “Bonnie & Neddy”, the season premier, is the first of five new episodes scheduled to air over the next four nights. So, even though last night’s was just okay, the rest of the workweek is still laced with mythical goodness.
Why was it just okay? Because it was a bit like drinking out of a fire-hose: a lot at once. Finn and Jake find Bonnibel’s brother – a dragon that powers Candy Kingdom by oozing candy juice, and was literally dropped on its head as a baby – under the orders of the self-proclaimed one-true-princess, the King of Ooo – who is running the kingdom and apparently ransacking it as well. Where’s Princess Bubblegum? Fixing a cabin from an old episode, really.
Everything might be a little different, but the soul of Adventure Time remains pure. The King of Ooo is a lovable scoundrel, Finn and Jake are still kicking butt, and we got some weird background on Princess Bubblegum. Back to how the almighty CN might actually be loading the bases for a grand-slam.
Perhaps this week’s episodes makeup a complete story-arc and will play out like a mini-series. Even if not, season seven is off to pretty decent start. “Bonnie & Neddy” is whimsical, sharp-witted, and ripe with potential tie-ins and backstory.
