Irish Activist Leader Compares Foe to Nelson from ‘The Simpsons’

Here at BubbleBlabber, we love it when public figures mention The Simpsons or any other cartoons (except for George Bush Sr. dissing it back in 1992; that was lame). And it’s even better when the international community gets involved.

Case in point: recently Ireland’s Anti-Austerity Alliance deputy Paul Murphy recently compared Environment Minister Alan Kelly to a bully – and not just any bully, but Simpsons regular Nelson Muntz.

In light of the possibility of Irish citizens having to pay for their water, Murphy said, “The Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Deputy Kelly, is swaggering around the place like Nelson from The Simpsons, threatening to rob people’s lunch money.”

(Side note: A political correspondent from Today FM, Gavan Reilly, tried to correct Murphy by claiming, “It was actually Jimbo Jones, and not Nelson Muntz, who would threaten to steal money.” This is blatantly false, and there are entire episodes that will prove my point. You leave the cartoons to the experts, Mr. Reilly, and we’ll leave the political corresponding and whatnot to you.)

For a little background, apparently housing agencies have began threatening tenants via letter (the absolute worst kind of threat, amiright?) and claiming they’ll dock the money from non-complier’s welfare checks, and Murphy felt like he needed a cartoon reference to really get people’s attention.

And we can’t deny the strategy worked. If you had approached me yesterday and said I’d be writing on the Irish water charge issue, I would have maced your crazy ass faster than you could say, “Haw haw.” Which goes to show that the world of cartoon news is more complex than one would think, and also that I’m a skittish paranoid outcast that’s extremely distrusting of strangers.
