‘South Park: The Stick of Truth’ Has an Unclear Future

As far as freemium games are concerned, South Park: The Stick of Truth was a success. It sold well, and fans and critics generally praised it.

However, the game was moved from failed publisher THQ to Ubisoft (after initially being intended for South Park Digital Studios with Viacom) and the rough transition likely nixed the possibility of future downloadable content (DLC).

“As far as we know [Ubisoft and South Park] are done,” said Feargus Urquhart, CEO of Obsidian Entertainment, a game developer. He added, in an interview with Polygon, that nothing is final yet, and the future of the game – if there is one – remains a mystery.

The reason isn’t potential or popularity (SP: TSoT is one of the most successful licensed games ever) but the fact that producing the game was much more stressful than anticipated.

“It feels like a season of the TV show,” Urquhart said. “If you go back five years to our first meeting with Trey [Parker] and Matt [Stone], we all said it had to be South Park. It had to look like the show and feel like the show and we did it.” This included getting Trey, Matt, and the show’s team on production.

Once it was finished, everyone involved needed an indefinite break, and this is the reason why new DLC is up in the air.

Still, there are folks involved that are beginning to kick the tires on expanding the story & game, and we’ll be sure to keep you updated if anything new develops.
