Review: Adventure Time “Dark Purple”

One of my favorite characters in Adventure Time makes a return after a lengthy absence. I cannot wait!

There are times when Adventure Time just takes a left turn, and it works out beautifully. “Dark Purple” is one of those times, and it features Susan Strong, a character that hasn’t been seen since Season Three’s “Beautopia.” It was great to see her take the stage, and Finn, Jake, and Marceline take support this week.

Normally, Susan’s stories are relatively simple. Either she is trying to take something over, like in “Susan Strong,” or trying to keep her home safe in “Beautopia.” This week, there’s a shade more complexity added to the Susan, who was tasked with saving the baby of one of her fellow Beautopians. One thing different in “Dark Purple,” is that Susan changed her outfit to shorts and a ratty tank-top, and later on, she has some sort of chip on the side of her head. DUM-DUM-DUM! The plot thickens, kids!

While I can take a trip down Speculation Boulevard, I am going to stick on point with the episode, because “Dark Purple” is a solid episode. Taking the drone express to the Super Porp facility that is as deep underground as Beautopia and the Hoo-mans. Susan and her two comrades infiltrate the facility, find the baby, and tear that sumbitch to the ground.

There isn’t much to say, plot wise, and I think that’s the weakness of “Dark Purple.” When you have a character that can’t speak a full sentence flanked by two characters who don’t speak outside of hand gestures, it’s hard to convey much. It takes away a bit of what could have been a great episode, but if you put a character that spoke at least as much as Susan, you would have been better off, and possibly more entertained. It’s the price to pay for an episode with minimal Finn and Jake, and maximum Susan Strong.
