Bart Simpson Signed By Russian Soccer Team

FC Zenit Saint Petersburg of Russia has signed a new star. No, his name is not Messi, or Ronaldo, or even Beckham – it’s Simpson. Bart Simpson, that is.

After “reaching an agreement with 20th Century Fox,” the team signed Bart on Monday, fresh off the heels of FXX’s 12-day Simpsons marathon.

Prior to the announcement, the team teased in a tweet that it had just signed “one of the biggest stars in the world just before the transfer window” closed.

The organization also made a YouTube video showing a Bart costumed character in full uniform, meeting his teammates & taking photos with them. (By the way: what’s up with Bart’s eyes? They have these weird creepy lids around them for some reason.)

Bart chose to wear number 87, in honor of 1987, the year The Simpsons first premiered on The Tracey Ullman Show.

No word on whether or not Bart was influenced by his father’s stint as a World Cup referee or the Mexico vs. Portugal match he attended prior to Springfield’s town-wide riot back in ’97.
