Review: Regular Show “Paint Job”

Mordecai and Rigby get to refresh the paint on the house. Why do I have the feeling that they are going to have a rainbow house? Find out what happened, after the jump!

Spoilers Below

You would think, that after so many mishaps at the park, that Benson would learn by now that there is no good in giving Mordecai and Rigby as big of a job as repainting the house? Well, when Mordecai tries to make a Pizza Pouch get in Rigby’s mouth with a sling shot, things go horribly wrong. Meaning, that there are Pizza Pouches all over the house. In one of the funniest Benson freakouts yet, he ends up telling Mordecai and Rigby that they either clean the house, or they’re fired. Of course, Rigby wants to use the power washer, but Mordecai keeps it away from him. You need power to use the power washer, obviously.

Mordecai starts slow, which is good. Rigby’s ADD kicks in, and kicks it up to 10. That causes Mordecai to lose control, and start tearing the paint off of the house. Rigby tries to take over, but he has less control over the hose than Mordecai. Benson sees the armageddon happening from his office, and runs out. He cuts the power off, causing Rigby to crash on the ground. Because the house is a complete mess, Benson gives them until the end of the weekend to repaint the house, or they’re fired.

Rigby, in typical Rigby fashion, thinks he has all of this time, so he wants to bro out with Mordecai and play some video games. Mordecai, completely different from normal Mordecai fashion, says no. Because he wants to go on his date with CJ, he wants to get it done fast. Rigby bro-talks Mordecai into getting it done today, but they only get the garage door done. Mordecai freaks out, because they are nowhere close to done. Rigby tells Mordecai to go on his date, and he can handle it. Mordecai becomes really skeptical, but ultimately leaves and let’s Rigby take care of it. He works hard enough to get some paint onto a rolling pan, then goes in to watch some TV.

During the commercial, he sees an ad for free stealth house painting, courtesy of Stealth Co. He calls, with the doorbell going off instantly. No one is at the door, because he already made it in the house. After signing a contract, getting fingerprints, retnal scan and blood drawn, everything is set. Rigby then decides to swing by the coffee shop, where Mordecai and CJ are on their date. Mordecai freaks out, because Rigby is not painting. They make it back to the house, or where the house should have been. Mordecai freaks, because the house seems gone. The house, in fact, is now stealth. The guy from Stealth Co. stops by, and tells them that the test phase is over, and they are now blowing up the house. The guy throws up a tracker, and bails.

Rigby tries to get the tracker down, solo-bro style, because he wants to prove himself. Mordecai tells him that no matter what, they’re best friends. They work together to get the tracker off the roof. It goes right to Muscle Man. He tosses it back to Rigby when he reads what the tracker is. Rigby throws it in the other direction, right to Benson. In a triangle game of catch, it ends up in Benson’s car. Because of his buttered popcorn that he was eating earlier, Benson can’t grip anything to get into his car. A missile explodes right in Benson’s car, but everyone is alright. It takes Benson’s car exploding for him to realize that the house is invisible. You go, gumball man.

If the episode ended right after Benson’s freak out in the opening 30 seconds, I would have been perfectly okay with it. Unfortunately, the story here is rather ho-hum. It’s another “Rigby messes up really bad, and he has to fix it / prove himself” story. We have seen it numerous times before, and it doesn’t bring much to the table, except that the house is invisible. However, the Stealth Co. guy was pretty cool. He reminded me of the old school detectives like Dick Tracy.

This episode was just boring to me. I think this episode should have been shelved, and aired later, to be honest. Almost every other network took the week off, and since Cartoon Network only airs one day of new shows a week, they wouldn’t have been missing out on much, anyway. Not every episode can knock it out of the park, but this feels like a foul bunt with two strikes. Maybe next week, guys.
