Shorts Review: Summoners Episodes 1 and 2

Just when you thought you couldn’t get enough League of Legends, Machinima released two episodes of Summoners! Check out our take on it after the jump!

If you own any type of PC that can run it, you’ve probably tried to play League of Legends. Hell, you probably have friends who have played it. I suck at the game, and watching it being played is about as fun as getting my dick kicked in with a spiked pair of Doc Marten’s. So, when I was tasked to watch this, I kind of had a little bit of trepidation.

And boy was I fucking wrong! This animation in this is of the quality that you could find in a cut scene in a AAA title. Better yet, if there was to be a story mode, the people who animated this would be perfect to animate the cut scenes. They’re just beautiful. The story, on the other hand, could use some work.

In episode one, Josh, Clint, Gil, Ariel, and Logan are brought into the world of League of Legends as the characters Master Yi, Volibear (He’s a fucking polar bear), Irelia, Riven and Zed. They decide that since they’re stuck, they should buy drugs. They try to do that by visiting Teemo, who tries to rip them off, but Ariel kills him with her bare hands. Dex and Cody, as Darius and Graves, come to them offering drugs.

After a bit, Allie is stuck in Katarina, who Josh mistakes for the Angel of Death. It may have also been the drugs talking. Everyone is tripping balls, except for Gil, who got candy. In the funniest moment of the episode, Cody comes out of his drug bender long enough to have some metal playing, and fire erupt! Josh finds out how to channel his powers at the end of the episode, or he is still dripping balls.

In episode two, you find Graves still drugged out, and Josh trying to talk the merits of getting stuck in Destiny. Clint can’t catch breakfast, because his hands don’t close, and they send Josh to go cut down wood. Meanwhile, Allie and Clint are talking about backstabbing the new guys. They also have an exhilarating conversation about how to pronounce aluminum. We come to find out that Allie, Clint and Cody all work together.

Josh finds a tree, that he mistakes for Maokai. It turns out to only be a talking tree named Bel’Grot. He has a decent conversation with the tree, then decides that it would be better for Bel’Grot to be cooking his food instead of being a tree. So, he takes Ariel’s sword, and starts hacking into Bel’Grot. After a few minutes, that’s the end of Bel’Grot.

As a story, it’s got little merit. However, if you take the story, and make it so that your stoner friends are all playing, you have this show. Right now, there’s only two episodes, and hopefully, there’s more to it coming soon. A funny story with a fuck ton of beautiful animation is a formula that should be replicated over and over.
