Shorts Review: 16-Bit High School “Game Genie Ruined My Life!”

This show is what happens when you mix Captain N and the Game Master with Clone High. Check out after the jump to see if it's worth the cartridges it was inspired by!

16-Bit High School revolves around the notion of what would happen if Mario, Mega Man, Master Chief, and Zelda had either gender swaps or had different personalities. Mega Kid is a nerd complete with glasses, Maria is a gender swapped Mario, Jimmy is your typical Spartan jock, and Epona is your princess stereotype. With that in mind, let’s take a look at 16-Bit High School.

Mega Kid is bummed out, because he got an A- on a test. Maria is trying to console him, but goes to lunch. She punches a wall to get some coin, where she is admonished by Miss C. Meanwhile. Mega Kid is offered a Super Genie by the Genie. He teleports where Jimmy, Maria, and Epona are to show off all of the powers of the Super Genie. All of the teleporting makes Epona throw up, and Maria tells Mega Kid that it’s cheating. She tells, causing Mega Kid to teleport Miss C out of the class room. This sets off a mega power trip for Mega Kid, where even Maria’s star power would work. Meanwhile, his misuse of the Super Genie is causing their world to glitch out. He causes the world to glitch out. Turns out that the show is just a game that two schmucks are playing.

I am going to nit-pick a little. When the show is called 16-Bit High School, shouldn’t the guys that were playing be holding Super Nintendo controllers? Ok, with that out of the way, this show was actually pretty funny. The characters are different enough to not take away from the familiarity that they were inspired by. Which is good, because most people flock to shows that bring out some nostalgic feelings. How do you think The Goldbergs is still a show? Getting back on track, Mega Kid going bat shit with the Super Genie was hilarious. The animation when the show seemingly glitched out was really well done. It reminded me of the Adventure Time episode, “A Glitch is a Glitch”. Overall, this show was really fun to watch, and y’all need to check it out.
