Homer finds himself inside the the Krustyburger Dunk Tank. Being able to hold his breath inside the tank for almost 8 minutes is a special feat, according to Mr. Hurlbut. The Springfield Historical Society member informs Chief Wiggum and Homer that since Homer held is breath long enough to break a 100-year-old record, he will become the new chief of police. Wiggum has nothing to do but accept in the face of the town charter. On the first day on the job, he got to skip the hazing, and eat the secret Copper Cruller. Later, Homer stopped Rainer Wolfcastle for speeding in a school zone. He pleads with Homer not to give him a ticket so he doesn’t lose his license. Homer makes him a new recruit, instead. Meanwhile, Wiggum is miserable at home, but he manages to find a job at the power plant, taking Homer’s old job.

Homer is in a meeting with Mayor Quimby, and Quimby starts railing him for the highest crime rate ever, and then congratulates him for a job well done. Homer gets home, and he is sad that he screwed up. Even Lisa has become indifferent to his gross misconduct as Chief. The next day, Homer clears out the force, and brings in Lenny and Carl. They try to root out all of the crime in town. They start with the mob funded illegal ice shaving racket that is using imported Cuban ice. Wiggum has been doing a great job as safety inspector, having no accidents while working for the plant. Meanwhile, Homer seems to be doing a good job with wrangling the criminals. He even caught Krusty for stealing Henny Youngman’s act.

Homer ends up going into the power plant, trying to find some code violation. Homer opens up a door that should never be opened, and he ends up filling the room with toxic gas. Wiggum holds his breath, runs in, closes the valve. He passes out, and comes to with the news that he held his breath for a full 8 minutes, breaking Homer’s record. He takes back the badge, and resets all of Homer’s changes. He got the breath clause out of the charter. Back at home, Bart finds a similar clause involving juggling 6 pies and becoming elementary school principal.

This comic was very middle of the road. It wasn’t Police Academy, but it was definitely more enjoyable than Police Academy 5. It was “light chuckle” funny, but nothing really to take away from it. Actually, the funniest part of this issue was the very beginning with Homer stuck in a dunk tank of soda. There is nothing really of note. Homer becomes a cop, he screws up then fixes it, homer stops being a cop. Nothing made me want to say buy this book. There’s even anything saying to stay away.  That’s the gist of the book. This book wasn’t for me.
