Review: Golan the Insatiable ‘Dear Uncle Gerald’

Spoilers Below

Golan has a version of ‘The Lord’s Prayer’ which is pretty funny and its said every night before Golan and Dylan fall asleep. When everyone wakes up, Golan stays at home while the entire family take Dylan to the funeral of her Uncle Gerald to which she is now THRILLED…except for the fact that Golan isn’t going with them. Golan gets annoyed and even calls the cops, but Dylan calls home to tell Golan where she is, but Alexis grabs the phone before she can even get a sentence out. Thankfully, the mayor follows Alexis on Instagram and as such Golan’s able to figure out where the family stopped off before heading to the funeral. After threatening one of the people at the Box Wine exhibit, Golan convinces the dude to text Alexis and ask where she is. Golan ends up at the funeral and he shows up shit-faced drunk. Its here that Richard tells Golan that he isn’t considered family and that’s why he didn’t get invited to the funeral. This convinces Golan to prove his worth by reanimating Gerald’s spirit into a new carcass. Dylan steals her uncle’s ashes and heads to a local motel where Golan holds up with a deer. He orders the deer to eat Gerald’s ashes, but the deer ends up beating the shit out of Richard whilst he’s taking a shower. Dylan comes clean that the ashes aren’t her uncle’s and really it was just coffee which is why the deer went homicidal. The family heads to the lake, and spreads Gerald’s ashes in respect for his dying wishes.

There are a lot of good ideas here as we continue to learn Golan’s habits and whatnot like demonizing deer and drowning people to get answers, but what are his motives? . Richard is a great way for the show to stay grounded and to remind us all that his family really has to live with a demon, so in a sense, this show seems to have to do more about Richard vs Golan with Dylan caught in the middle then it does about anything else. Good show, but I’m still trying to figure out how these characters fit together, and if there is an end game that both sides are trying to get to. Does Richard and the family want Golan out of the house? How did Golan get to Earth and just become friends with Dylan?  I think these questions need answering if the first season is to be called a success.
