REVIEW: GRAVITY FALLS “THE LEGEND OF GOBBLEWONKER

When Dipper and Mable hear rumors of a sea monster living in the lake, they want to prove it.

Alright, so this week the kids are going fishing! Uncle Stan is looking to spend some quality time with Dipper and Mable and decides that he wants to take them out on a rickety boat to do just that, but once they get to the late, the kids hear about a local monster sighting. As luck would have it, Dipper and Mable also hear about a $1000 grand prize if anyone can get a picture of a monster and send it into a magazine. Plans change when Dipper and Mable decide to not go on a rickety boat in favor of a big boat with a steering wheel and local goof Soos.

So, while Stan is back at the lake ruining everyone’s afternoon, Soos and the twins make it to Scuttlebutt Island. While there they stumble on the hiding spot of some beavers rocking a chainsaw so the obvious thinking is that there isn’t any monsters here…that is until one shows up and chases the whole group the forest ala the T-rex in Jurassic Park! 

There are a few differences between this chase and the T-Rex chase however. For one, the T-rex can’t swim like the Gobblewonker so the chase with Mable and Dipper actually is quite a bit more destructive as they go up and down the lake. Eventually, they hit a cave and the monster gets stuck long enough for Dipper to get a pic. Turns out, after a bit of investigation the monster is really an elaborate machine made by an old man whom has been shunned by his family whenever the opportunity for activities pop up. The twins and Soos decide against trying to claim any crazy prize and instead opt to spend the rest of the day fishing with Uncle Stan.

Muuuuch, muccch better than the preview episode. For one, I loved the mystery behind the monster but the real joy was all the crazy happenings along the way, from Soos and Mable hurling beavers along the way to Stan acting like a crazy old man, Gravity Falls gives so much heart and yet still keeps the laughs coming so the show doesn’t get too one-sided. I also felt Dipper was quite a bit improved this time around making me think maybe Jason just needed some time to settle into the role. Gravity Falls is an absolute winner!
