Exclusive Preview: Deep Space 69 Season Four

With only a handful of episodes left for Lastman on VRV/Mondo, we’re gonna need something else to watch on the popular streaming channel and as of today we no longer have to wait.

Starting today, we’re getting eight brand-new, 11-minute episodes, of Deep Space Season Four. The first two episodes have dropped, and we got a chance to chat with show creator Daniel Katz about the series and what fans can expect moving forward. Check out two clips below the interview, plus, check in later today as we’ll have the reviews for both episodes.

The fourth season of Mondo’s raunchy, sci-fi parody animated series Deep Space 69 debuts exclusively on streaming service VRV this Thursday 12/14 @ 4pm PT

Bubbleblabber:  What has been the reason for D69’s staying power? Why is it that despite change in platforms and delivery methods, the franchise has been able to still go strong?

Daniel Katz: Space Viagra. But seriously, it’s hard to say. I try and have fun writing the show and hopefully people have fun watching it.

D69 is very raunchy, but you’ve managed to make the franchise not a “one-note” joke. How cognizant are you of this when producing new episodes?

I try and keep the erotic nature of the show driven by character and story. Underlying all the penis jokes are deep philosophical questions about the act of creation, procreation and how it drives the long boner of history. As Plato once said, “lest he who cast the boner upon dem titties be he who be the bone man.”

Take us back to the beginning, how did the concept of Deep Space 69 come about?

It started with the simple premise of a captain whose sole mission in life is to have sex with every single alien species that has been discovered. Jay still has a binder full of women somewhere on the ship, although lately he’s not been keeping track as well as he used to. He’s matured and come to realize there are way too many species to ever bed them all.

Daniel, what are some of your favorite animated series of both all-time and what are you watching right now?

Classic Simpsons can’t be beat. Ren and Stimpy changed my brain. Ghost in the Shell blew my mind. Rick and Morty is of course single-handedly raising the IQ of the human species and bringing us closer to collective enlightenment. I feel a close personal identification with Saitama from One Punch Man. Kill la Kill makes me happy. Nichijou makes me laugh in a special way.  All time best — FLCL.

There’s a lot of animation in space at the moment, what are the things that you want to do to make sure D69 differentiates itself from the pack?

I’ve been making Deep Space 69 for over five years now so I try not to worry too much about what other shows are doing and just stick to my thing. I think there can never be enough space shows because space is infinite and we can all live in the universe together. That said, we have the best boobs.

Will the D69 movie ever happen? And were some of the original ideas from the movie being used in the show’s fourth season or have you’ve been able to keep them separated?

JJ Abrams beat me up and stole my script for the movie. So if you notice more thongs and boners in the new Star Wars movies, you’ll know what happened.

What can fans expect from Jay, Hamilton, and others for the upcoming season?

The mythical “Land of a Thousand Breasts” is closer than ever before. Perhaps it will finally reveal Jay’s true destiny. Also, Hamilton has a girlfriend.

About Deep Space 69
Deep Space 69 chronicles the misadventures of a transport ship in outer space led by Jay and his Koala, wingman/co-pilot, Hamilton. A send-up to the many humorless sci-fi films and series that take themselves far too seriously, Deep Space 69 treads lightly on space exploration and instead focuses on Jay’s incessant exploits with the fairer sex and Hamilton’s frustration with their foolish missions.
