EMMY TALK: Fuzzy Door Prods is pushing the wrong series for an Emmy.

Family Guy vs American Dad!

You may remember about a month ago when the producers of Family Guy started pushing for an Emmy nom with a Donald Trump-inspired getup that did little to nothing to sway America’s voting stubbornness as Trump was eventually made to be the Republican Nominee of the National Election.

That said, I couldn’t help but wonder if Fuzzy Door productions was pushing the wrong animated comedy for an Emmy nod due to the fact that they have yet another animated comedy that is doing quite well in terms of quality.

Enter…BORDERTOWN! Psyche…no one thinks that. Actually, I’m talking about American Dad! To this day Kevin Reilly is probably loving himself for making the decision to cancel American Dad! on FOX only to eventually take over a Turner Network that had picked up the series to two more seasons. Since the network move, American Dad! has by far and away been the most-improved series over time, and is WAY more consistent than what Family Guy has been the last few seasons all the while leaving FOX struggling as to what to fill American Dad!’s slot with. The aforementioned Bordertown hasn’t worked, and the live-action stuff gives us results ranging from brilliant (Last of Us) to head-scratching (Mulaney).

That’s not to say Family Guy isn’t getting better, because it is. But, Family Guy has been nowhere near as funny or creative as American Dad! the last few seasons despite the fact that Family Guy probably gets the bigger budget and way more reliance on guest stars. Remember when American Dad! was going down that guest star route almost as heavy as Family Guy? That’s not to say American Dad! doesn’t do guest stars, but they certainly don’t rely as heavily on them as they used to in the FOX days. FOX PR would whore out anyone if they think it’d make them a nickel. For TBS, it’s all about the value of the franchise.

Ever since the move to TBS, American Dad! has returned to form as a show that showcases more of the spirit that old-school Family Guy in that the dialogue is way more crass and edgy than it’s much-longer running cousin. As a result, maybe Fuzzy Door should be touting an Emmy nod for the TBS series, rather than the FOX one that just isn’t as worthy…yet.

Which show do YOU think is better? Family Guy or American Dad!?
