WonderCon@Home 2021: M.O.D.O.K. Panel Recap

When it comes to the entertainment business, it seems as if Patton Oswalt has his hands in all of the pots. So, why wouldn’t he have his own adult animated series set in the Marvel Universe? And the die-hard comic fans and adult cartoon fiends have aligned in their anticipation of this new show centering around one of the most obscure and awkward supervillains Marvel has to offer.

M.O.D.O.K. is a strange choice for a character to represent the entertainment juggernaut Marvel. But any comic nerd will tell you it is worth getting excited about. The gigantic floating head not only looks hilarious, but he is also a character full of self-deprecating angst. Basing an entire series around him can produce nothing but comedy.

With the series set to premiere May 21st on Hulu, there was no doubt that we would be getting some major glimpses during the early comic convention circuit. And thanks to the wonderful digital age we live in, events like WonderCon have not had to be cancelled but moved to global audiences. This means you didn’t have to be in Anaheim today to enjoy a panel on the next Marvel television show.

Patton Oswalt himself hosts the Q & A that gives just a few of the Easter Eggs that we can expect from this series. Joining him is writer Jordan Blum and cast members Melissa Fumero, Ben Schwartz, Aimee Garcia, and Jon Daly. The 40-minute panel offers us our first look at the characters they will be playing as well as the dynamics between them.

Right off the bat, we discover this won’t just be a series about a supervillain attempting to take over the world. On top of that, there are going to be some major family storylines driving the plots forward. Schwartz and Fumero give us insights into who the children of the supervillain are, while Garcia plays the complicated wife of the titular character. Added to that will be Jon Daly playing the robot Super Adaptoid, another obscure villain plucked from the depths of Marvel.

M.O.D.O.K.’s dysfunctional family is original to this series but has recently become canon in the comic universe thanks to the miniseries M.O.D.O.K.: Head Games, written by Oswalt and Blum.

Another big draw for this show is that it will be utilizing ground-breaking stop-motion animation techniques perfected by Stoopid Buddy Stoodios. This panel confirms that the series will be unlike anything that we have seen before and it will add depth to an already dynamic story.

Unlike other panels like this where the celebrities feel like they are only there because it is part of their contract, these stars are clearly excited about the show. More than once Patton Oswalt had to bite his tongue to avoid spilling the beans about potential Easter Eggs. Thankfully, that does not mean that a few did not slip out.

The biggest reveal from this panel could shake the entire fandom to its core. Iron Man will be returning to the MCU once more! Though this time he will be performed by the lovable Jon Hamm. And it likely won’t be the return that we all are hoping for.

Additionally, Bill Hader and Whoopi Goldberg will be making guest appearances on M.O.D.O.K. Both will be playing their own obscure Marvel characters such as Angar the Screamer and Pound Cakes. And it seems as if Nathan Fillion will be playing a significant role as the little-known Avenger Wonder Man.

That would be enough, but it sounds as if there will be plenty of other surprises to come. The shock of the characters that Marvel allowed them to use in this series is still setting in for the showrunners.

And they make promises on characters from all over the board from the big A-listers all the way down to the D list.

Mental Organism Designed for Only Killing is already sounding like one of the best things to hit adult animation in 2021, a year that is already boasting some significant premieres. But this one will be doing things unlike anyone else, all while playing around in one of the biggest box-office sandboxes of our generation.

M.O.D.O.K. is set to premiere on Hulu on May 21st 2021. You can watch the full WonderCon@Home panel on YouTube or the Comic-Con’s official website. And don’t miss out on the first-look clip at the end which features the titular character in an elaborate fight scene.
