The episodes were meant to be an interlude for the upcoming South Park: The Stick of Truth, but since THAT game was delayed (one of several delays), the producers went in a slightly different direction in that the episode focuses more on the gaming console wars with the likes of PlayStation and Microsoft fans going to war over console superiority. And while that flame war still rages on most message boards today, arguing over console supremacy has been a part of gaming culture for eons.
