Shorts Review: Dead Gary Rising

Have zombies finally “jumped the shark?” We’ve seen them win awards, exhaust box offices and appear in commercials for candy, phones, and car batteries. Even Hyundai is giving you the chance to design a zombie car. The Walking Dead is a ratings juggernaut. So it’s easy to see why we’ve had such an influx of zombie-based shows as of late. Some have been great, like Zombies vs. Ninjas or With Zombies. Does Dead Gary Rising hold up to that standard? Let’s take a closer look…

Spoilers Below

Four people are running through zombie filled streets, which is very reminiscent of Left 4 Dead. They arrive at a house that was emanating a distress call. Turns out that the home only occupant is Gary and he wasn’t in distress. He was just bored. As the zombies begin to close in on the house, the group readies their weapons for battle. Gary, however, considers himself a bit of an “inventor” and decides to combine some of the weapons to create a super weapon ala Dead Rising. And since Dead Gary Rising is a comedy, it’s safe for you to assume that the weapons backfire in hilarious and deadly ways. In the end, Gary and Ryan head back to base camp. What will happen to them? Well, we’ll have to like/favorite the video to see more!

But do we want to see more? The art is fairly simplistic and surprisingly really fun to watch. For such a dark subject matter, the colors are bright and fresh. Gary has the look of Steven from Steven Universe if he were going through a midlife crisis. The writing is fairly decent with laughs smattered around just enough to keep you smiling. The sound effects are great but mildly off when it comes to placement. It could have just been some lag on my end, so I’ll give that a pass for now. As for the overall, I’d definitely want to see more episodes, so let’s get the likes up so we can see more!
