Season Review: Momma Named Me Sheriff Season Two

It’s hard to deny the success of Mr. Pickles. The show, which ran for three seasons and one episode, was a technical achievement that continues to withstand the test of time. The series was a resounding success, routinely averaging around a million viewers or more through the entirety of it’s run.

Because of this, Momma Named Me Sheriff might always have to live in the shadow of it’s predecessor. That’s not to say the franchise hasn’t grown a bit in it’s second season on Adult Swim, but the structure is that of a typical animated sitcom with an idiot buffoon at the forefront. That said, Will Carsola (who voices the titular character) and Dave Stewart’s pathos of debauchery is still very much felt through the entirety of the series. Random acts of violence, mutated characters, and an increasingly sensitive Sheriff who does whatever his mom tells him to as long as he gets his puddin’, are the kinds of ingredients expected of the dynamic duo and they are very much on display here.

Momma Named Me Sheriff is still very much in worldbuilding mode. The series not only focuses on longtime favorites like Stanley Goodman (Jay Johnston) and the Sheriff, but season two also saw increasing reliance on one-time Mr. Pickles bit characters like Dispatch and Carl who have very much flourished into being dependable “B-plot” players while Sheriff and Co. tear Old Town to the ground. I couldn’t help but notice that whilst the Goodman family had been somewhat relegated to that of bit characters, Ms. Pickles’ prominence has been growing with more than a few nods to the aforementioned classic Adult Swim franchise which, hopefully, is a sign of things to come.

In the meantime, Momma Named Me Sheriff featured a more than solid second season with a truly unmissable season finale that is worth every penny of it’s 22-minute runtime. Here’s hoping the waning ratings won’t be a factor and that the show can do well on streaming so that more seasons can be ordered and we have some semblance of anything that Will and Dave work on because I’ll surely be the first on line to watch anything they make.
