Season Review: Emo Dad (@RealEmoDad)

Spoilers Below

A guy named David complains about his wife leaving and uses emo music to help cure himself. Like most people that listen to emo, David is unemployed, doesn’t feel like paying bills, and again like most usually depends on the welfare of others. Don’t worry tho emo Dave writes plenty of poetry. As luck would have it we are introduced to his emo son, Chris that his son is also an emo kid, but he seems to act a bit more grown up as he tries to keep a job and regularly attends school. . Its actually in episode 2 we meet Chris’ potential girlfriend Jasmine, but because emo Chris takes forever to get his douche makeup on, Jasmine ends up falling for his dad due to the fact that he speaks to her soul. Eventually David does start dating Jasmine and even starts hanging out with Chris’ friends like Kyle even bringing the whole gang to a probably terrible Paramore show. This leads to a showdown with Chris and Dave as Chris carves his name into his wrist and Dave takes off his pinkie toe causing him to bleed and pass out. When he awakens, David decides to start a band and despite the fact that he can’t write music (just like all of the emo bands), his group accepts him as he goes the extra mile to steal his son’s diary as inspiration for lyrics. After all this time of being called a poser, Chris finally agrees with his dad and decides to give up the emo lifestyle and not be such a pussy anymore. This causes his dad to do the same, as we learn that this was all part of a plan for Chris’ mom and dad to look separated in an attempt to have Chris outgrow his emoo vagina and be a real man. Unfortunately, Dave’s wife meets another guy and now he’s emo dad again.

Overall this was a rather hysterical series, one that deserves your attention. I’m friends with emo kids and I can tell you first hand that the depiction of the typical fan base isn’t far off so it looks as though creators Benny and Rafi Fine did quite a bit of research before diving into the bleeding world of emo. The over arching story throughout the series made me want to watch each episode one after another, but the one thing that was holding this series back was the constant ‘Gawds’ that were being thrown between Chris and Dave, making it an almost annoying tribute to Napoleon Dynamite. That said, the twist last episode had me fooled like a mo-fo, and ties up the series into one workable effort. Let’s get some more of this!
