Season One Review: The Muppets

Back in September 2015, when the new Muppets show premiered, a lot of people were disappointed with the way the series handled the beloved characters. Instead of the joy-filled lovable characters, we got a behind-the-scenes type of show (like Modern Family or The Office) where the characters were a little more adult. The Muppets now had relationship and emotional problems to deal with. Unfortunately, these problems usually centered around Kermit, Piggy, and Fozzy. The show suffered from leaving out their comedy origins.

In February 2016, when the show returned from its winter hiatus, a new show-runner was brought on board. As a result, the series got a little more light-hearted. Instead of focusing on the relationship troubles of a few characters, plots revolved around the shenanigans of all of the characters. It was just a bit closer to the original series we remembered. Kermit’s new pig girlfriend, Denise, broke up with him so now we can get back to the original OTP – Kermit and Piggy. Even Gonzo got back with Camilla the chicken. Everything is as it should be.

Unfortunately, I’m not sure the audience stuck around long enough to see the change. Most people ditched the show early on. As of this writing, ABC hasn’t announced whether they are renewing The Muppets. I hope it does get one more season to prove its capabilities. A new Muppet show doesn’t have to be so depressing to watch. It can be funny too.
