REVIEW:METALOCALYPSE “DIVERSITYKLOK”

Accusations of racism are leveled at the band, so they open an urban youth center to improve their image. Elsewhere, Toki starts a club but excludes Murderface.

Spoilers Below

The members of Dethklok are racists?  How can this be?  Is Dethklok down a member?  These questions pop up by the time the opening sequence hit.  Luckily, that lovable Norwegian Toki is still with the band.  Now, onto more pressing matters.  Dethklok is alleged to be racists!

Recap time!

The episode starts out with Edgar Jomfru watching over an audio console with a fade in to the biggest press conference ever.  To bring  everyone up to date:  Toki just got left at home, Nathan has a new catch phrase, and Murderface has a new 80’s style porn moustache.  Go Murderface!

Then, a reporter brings up a question that has been baffling music critics since the 60’s; “Why are the majority of metal fans white?”  With a follow up of, “Is Dethklok racist?”  As a metal head, I can say that this is merely coincidental, but very good questions.  Also, why are the majority of rap fans black?  Or Salsa fans Hispanic?  Just saying…

Queue the emergency meeting with Ofdenson.  Ofdenson is trying to tell the band that being called racist is the death knell in a band’s career.  But, like always, the band doesn’t quite get it. And with another memorable quote from one Nathan Explosion to explain Dethklok’s stance on racism:  “We don’t give a fuck what color our fans’ skin is, because we don’t give a fuck about our fans.”

It’s hard to argue that they’re racist after that.  Thanks, Nathan ! “I love ethnics.  I love Mexican….food.”  Need I say more?  Ofdenson comes up with Dethklok doing a community outreach program to smooth over the allegations of racism about Dethklok.  Who smells hilarity ensuing?  Oh great, they forgot Toki again.  Assholes.

Now am I the only one who likes when Toki actually sings on the show?  The songs all feel so…dare I say, whimsical and innocent.  Sometimes the video is creepy as fuck, but hilarious, whimsical and most of the time innocent.

So, what is the solution to Toki being left out?  Toki starts an exclusive club.  Only way to join is to receive a text saying that they’re in.  And everyone gets one.  Well, everyone except Murderface.  He is getting excluded because of his porn ‘stache.  Again, Murderface doesn’t have the look for something.

So, the Tribunal is up, going over all of the reasons why Dethklok being called racists is bad.  Again, there goes the world economy.  People in the streets, rioting, looting, mass suicide, you name it.  It will happen.  What’s the master plan?  Bring everyone together, and embrace all of our differences.  Uhh…what?

Ok, so, this is a major throwback to season 1.  Jomfru was listening to Dethwater while going over Falconback schematics.  Hell yes, my friends.  Just for that, I am throwing on Go Into the Water.  So, there subsonic frequencies made by whales, and they were trying to communicate to the band.  Jomfru needs more time to decipher them.

We cut to the band(minus Murderface)  having a sing along, then a montage of them doing things, and Murderface being left out.

Next scene shows Murderface trying to fit in, by slicking his hair back with butter, but still unwilling to shave the ‘stache.  Toki is being damn hard on Murderface.

Dethklok’s youth center is supposed to be a big hit with minorities.  Unfortunately, Toki’s uniform for his club kind of makes the band look…very Ku Klux Klan-ish.  Then…we get Murderface, with a haircut and a moustache shaving, looking very much like Hitler.  And again, Toki gets left behind.  There is so much wrong with this.  But I can’t help but laugh.

So…the notion of Metal being rather racist is tackled in this episode.  As you can see, it was taken in a very comedic route.  There is also a lot of stereotyping in the episode.  Like minorities really don’t care about much except youth centers, and that they will love you for building one.  Also, metal in general, are a bunch of racist people listening to racist bands playing racist music.  None can be further from the truth.

All in all, this was a great follow-up to the premiere.  There was a nod to season 1, recurring themes going through the first 2 episodes of the season, and the band was as dopey as ever.  Also, the pacing is right back to normal.  Thank freaking god for this.
