Review: We Bare Bears “Money Man”

“Yeah, science, bitch!”

Overview (Possible Spoilers Below)

The Titular Bears help Chloe present her project for a college science contest, but it’s not without obstacles as Chloe’s rival named Saanvi attempts to make things difficult…

Our Take

During the episode’s proceedings, we’re introduced to Chloe’s Rival who’s an older student within her school named Saanvi Patel, who’s invention while equally as impressive as Chloe’s on a different level, Saanvi’s methods to Wow Dr.Bean seem a bit underhanded in her methods. While the Bears do help Chloe in a supporting role for Chloe’s invention, but the focus is on Chloe’s intense rivalry in combination with a series of fun & comedic setpieces.

When Dr. Bean does get to the school contest via-helicopter, we’re constantly told how smart he’s supposed to be as science Judge and yet the despite the power & status to give scholarships to anyone, he comes across as an absent-minded, eccentric, elderly man-child but with the charm and likability of Commandant Lassard from the Police Academy movies.

when the plot begins to pick up, lots of comedic hijinx ensues in the form of bizarre scenarios, such as Saanvi’s science presentation involving shirtless muscular dudes which seem hilariously out of place for a science fair. The pacing & animation keep things consistently fun, and at some point, Both Chloe and Saanvi despite their begrudging attitudes, develop a modicum of mutual respect in the process.

Overall, “Money Man” was an episode that mainly succeeded in terms of weirdness and physical comedy. The twist at the end while funny feels like a social commentary on how colleges will give scholarships to anyone, yet easily overlook smart people when you put eccentric weirdo’s in charge. And the fate of both Chloes & Saanvi’s inventions while unexpectedly comedic in its twist isn’t very subtle in regards to who would particularly use them…
