English Dub Review: The Rolling Girls “Disappointing Person”
This week’s The Rolling Girls, “Disappointing Person,” gave viewers it’s first taste of the conflict between Mie Motors and Aichi Tenmusus. These are warring factions have gone so far as to destroy all of the sachihoko statues in the Nagoya. This is all well and good, but the conflict isn’t really conveyed until the last few minutes.
Lack of story not withstanding, I think that the art direction is pretty well done. The town the main crew is in resembles a sort of European town, with heavy influences of British towns. The motorcycle gang seems juxtaposed from the rest of the town, pretty much giving away what may happen over the course of this small story. This seems like a way to make the story a little more predictable, and it doesn’t seem conducive to a good story.
I am thinking that “Disappointing Person” is a very slow introduction to what may be a longer story than what we had in Comima. I’m not exactly sure what the writers are fishing for, because it seems like Himiko and her father are the main focus. But Himiko seems to be even more the focus when her and Tomoki, the captain of Mie Motors, are taken into a restaurant for a cliffhanger ending.
I think I would feel more forgiving towards “Disappointing Person” if I knew in advance what the following episodes have in store. However, in a vacuum, this episode faltered hard. I felt no interest whatsoever in either Himiko, the town, or either of the team captains. It was like “Disappointing Person” was actually trying to live up to the title. If it weren’t a lead in for the next episode or two, I would say skip it. It’s sad, because The Rolling Girls was my choice for the breakout of this new block of dubbed shows.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
