Review: The Great North “Say It Again, Ham Adventure”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

When Ham first came out to his family, the result was so underwhelmingly chill that he kept doing it. Now his boyfriend is convinced that he needs a more dramatic event, and so the Tobin’s travel to meet Cousin Danica, who is sure to take the news not-so-well. Unfrountely, she’s also wanted by the police, and the ensuing arrest upstages Ham’s big moment. But maybe he didn’t need it in the first place?

Our Take:

The Great North’s twentieth episode of this season is a fun one, full of excitement and chaotic energy and even a little tension. We’ve got coming out, singing, and even an almost-shooting, so suffice to say that Say It Again, Ham Adventure is one of the most fast-paced adventures so far this season.

It all starts innocently enough with Ham’s sudden desire for a big coming out moment. It’s nice to see the show embarking on a less traveled storyline like this, and give Ham more stuff to do. He’s kind of become my favorite underrated character this season, which I’m totally cool with. The whole resolution of the coming out party being that maybe he didn’t really need it in the first place is low key enough to be a sweet icing on the cake when contrasted with the potential murderous overtones of Cousin Danica.

And speaking of Cousin Danica, that’s where the episode really gets interesting. It makes sense that a cold and barren place like Alaska would have its fair share of serial killers, and that’s what gets Wolf and Honeybee searching for one of their own to make a podcast about. Their comedic caper eventually leads them to a hot dog restaurant where they connect some dots and end up thinking that Danica is a serial killer on the loose.

That allows the two plots to combine nicely into one, and gives Wolf and Honeybee some of the funnier lines of the night. I especially enjoyed them stopping for fries on the way to save their family, and then sneaking around back to finish the dogs in the woods while watching the house. The police sisters were almost too silly for the scene, but the way they managed to save the day with the ol’ tap on the shoulder trick made them okay in my book.

Honestly, this ended up being one of my favorite episodes of the season. It had a solid emotional core with Ham and his family together, but also provided plenty of jokes with Wolf and Honeybee along with some criminal chaos courtesy of Cousin Danica. The two cops may have been the weakest part of the ep, but even they redeemed themselves in the end. I’d have to say this week’s adventure was pretty great.
