Our Take

The first episode worked as your by-the-numbers competition storyline but nowhere as predictable with CJ being a flawed yet relatable character you instantly root for and near the end of the episode when it plays with expectations in such a way that it ends on kind’ve an ok note.

As for the 2nd half, I’m actually shocked that upon research, “El Raton” is an actual Hispanic mythical figure with legit cultural significance within the Spanish community much in the same way the Chinese myths that inspired the Netflix animated film “Wish Dragon” may have been the indirect basis for fairytale classics like “Aladdin” leading to some wacky hijinks regarding Bobby & Carl doing their best to keep Adelaide’s sense of wonder intact.

Overall, both episodes were a decent watch that was formulaic in places, yet harmless with their hijinx and positive lessons. I doubt there are actual contests that have people spinning objects in the air unless this is a new thing. As for the latter episode, I do find it odd that Carl’s Chinese-American Neighbor believes in the Hispanic variant of the tooth fairy considering that her own culture has “their own interpretation” of what to do with teeth, but the ending at least gave me a chuckle.
