Review: The Awesomes ‘Seaman’s Revenge’

Awesomes S3E1

Spoilers Below:

It’s been a long time since we last saw our Awesome friends, so if you need a refresher – look it up yourself! I ain’t some fancy teacher. Or you could probably read my review of the last episode or my season two review.

Ready now? Let’s go.

The episode opened with a newly evil-ized Mr. Awesome sending Dr. Malocchio away from their spaceship for help.

Meanwhile, back on Earth, the Awesomes were spending their day off at the aquarium when the dolphins began a revolt against the humans. The team then journeyed to visit Seaman, a member of the former Awesomes that defected, for help. Predictably, Seaman betrayed them all, and imprisoned everyone in his latest creation: “Land World.” But Muscleman (who was on a date instead of with his teammates) came to their rescue, and everyone battled Seaman and his cronies, eventually defeating them and capturing him.

When the Awesomes returned home, the intruder alarm was going off. Mr. Awesome had arrived.

In Case You Missed It:

1) Dr. Malocchio’s evil advice: “When you strangle someone, hold your hands like this.”

2) Best exchange? Muscleman: “You know, I read that dolphin fishing is killing all the tuna. / Sumo: “It’s the other way around.” / Muscleman: “Sorry…killing all of the tuna is dolphin-fishing, I read…[pause] No, I didn’t read it; I saw it on TV.”

3) At one point, Frantic exclaimed: “Wow! My first vaccination!”

4) Frantic (back again) put a seashell up to his ear while underwater and exclaimed: “I can hear the ocean!”

5) Muscleman’s half-fish girlfriend had a lip piercing that was a fish hook.

6) Muscleman was shown an anti-Land World documentary called Black Human, a spoof of the 2013 Sea World critique film Blackfish.

Season three is usually a defining moment for a series. The first one sets out to prove people should be watching. The second one is there to show the first wasn’t a fluke. But the third, that’s the year that establishes the potential for longevity.

If last night’s premiere was any indication, The Awesomes will be around for a long time.

Of course, the plot was exactly what we should come to expect. An issue arose, a villain was introduced, and the superheroes had to defeat them. Nice and simple, just like old times. The difference this time around, was that there was no Malocchio Jr. to tie all the episodes together. Instead, the running plot will likely feature the now evil Mr. Awesome, and the gang’s attempts to stop him and return him back to his old self.

All that matters now is whether or not it was funny. Despite one of my favorite characters, Lady Malocchio, not appearing in this one (I kind of had to expect that with her son now in jail and her husband in space) it absolutely was. Instead, this time around we got Seaman all over the place, with Andy Samberg doing a great job as the guest voice, spewing out ocean puns left and right.

In fact, the only type of joke there was more of, were the semen gags. (Ha…semen gags. See? I can join in on the fun too.) When I say there were a lot of Seaman/semen jokes, I really mean A LOT. And they were hilarious. In fact, it actually ended up being a bit of overkill, but I reckon that’s what the writers were going for, so I can’t really fault them for the overabundance.

As for the regular characters, I actually thought Frantic had the most funny lines – at least as far as non-ocean or non-semen puns go. His dialogue above (ICYMI) coupled with his excitement over seeing/meeting his whale hero and fondness for his lame childhood game (Wet Place) were worthy of chuckles from start to finish.

Hopefully the laughs this season can follow the same pattern. It might just be the high of a fresh season premiere (or the meth effects still lingering), but for now, I’m going to err on the side of optimism.
