English Dub Review: Sword Art Online “Guns and Swords”

Overview (Light Spoilers)

“Guns and Swords” was an interesting episode of Sword Art Online, that’s for sure. Kirito and Sinon make it to the registration kiosk, just in time. However, Kirito finally fessed up to Sinon about not being a girl, and got slapped for his troubles. Thankfully, this wasn’t the full episode, because the Bullet of Bullets tournament has begun! To be fair, I don’t know how important that actually is, considering any relatively intelligent anime watcher can say who’s going to win. At least the action made things really interesting, right?

The real draw to “Guns and Swords” is the opening match Kirito has. How well is he actually going to do in an FPS tournament when he brought a sword to a gun fight? Well, all of this time in Sword Art Online really trained him well. Kirito made it out of the first round with only a few bullet wounds. However, the ending of “Guns and Swords” gave us the first face to face encounter of Kirito and Death Gun. This is beyond important, because Kirito got the first clues as to who Death Gun really is. I’ll wait until next week to talk about that so I’m not spoiling everything.

All in all, “Guns and Swords” really ran that line between tedious for the first half of it, but came right back to the side of good action-y fun when the BoB tournament began. I really loved how Kirito was able to get through it by using some sort of “Batman Vision” to find where his opponent is and slash bullets and opponent with his sword. This sequence was worth sitting through the awkward encounter between Sinon and Kirito before the tournament started. However, I am getting amped to see what beef Death Gun has with Kirito. Yeah, Death Gun may be my favorite character so far.
