Review: Steven Universe “Stuck Together”

We’re all in this together.

Spoilers Below:

Aquamarine laughs at how Rose Quartz complied so easily, but Steven says he just wants to make sure everyone is safe. Topaz reveals that Lars is still on the ship, and Steven demands that they let Lars go. Aquamarine refuses, and Topaz traps both Steven and Lars until they reach Homeworld.

Lars blames Steven for the situation, and when pressed, explains that while everyone else escaped, he ran and hid. He realizes that she situation is his fault and blames himself for his cowardice, saying that he’d done so previously and that this is not a new thing. Steven tries to reason with Topaz, saying that she has no need to keep Lars captive, but she is unresponsive.

The ship has trouble, so Aquamarine sends Topaz to fix it. As she does so, Steven spots a destabilizer and urges Lars to try to grab it somehow. He suggests that Lars use his pants to try to lasso it, but Lars is very reluctant. Lars breaks down in frustration, asking Steven why he thinks he’s capable of doing all these things when he’s actually really afraid. Steven admits that he’s afraid too, and Lars tries to cheer him up. Steven is surprised that Lars isn’t being overly pessimistic, and says that even if the situation is awful, he’s glad he’s not alone.

Topaz, hearing all of this, is moved and begins to cry. She decides to let them go and programs an escape pod back to Earth. Steven is insistent on staying, but Lars urges him to come along too. As they argue, Aquamarine comes back down and sees the spectacle. Aquamarine destroys the escape pod, and Topaz fights back by pinning Aquamarine down and threatening her with the destabilizer. Aquamarine says that if Topaz follows through, then she will be shattered when they reach Homeworld. Topaz loses her will to fight, and Aquamarine orders her to defuse. She does so, and Aquamarine says that they’ll never speak of this again.

When they arrive on Homeworld, Steven tries to convince Topaz again, but they are, unresponsive, and separate Lars and Steven.

Overview:

This episode mainly deals with Lars, who has been since the start of the show, pessimistic and bitter. Lars admits that he doesn’t have Steven’s knack for heroism, and is just a coward. He spends most of the episode apathetic from shock, and seemingly unwilling to help. Only once Steven admits that he’s scared too does Lars try to be more positive, for Steven’s sake.

Lars is generally not likable, but he is very understandable. He’s not used to battle with Gems, and he’s been abducted away from his home and everything he knows. His attitude isn’t very helpful, especially during a crisis situation, but he’s scared and unwilling to be a hero. His reaction isn’t uncommon when a disaster occurs, for as he points out, not everyone can be a hero. People say that they will definitely do the heroic thing, but when it comes down to it, not everybody has that ability.
