Review: Steven Universe “Drop Beat Dad”
Don’t drop this episode.
Spoilers Below
Sour Cream is getting ready to put on a show. Steven, wanting to be a roadie, helps his friend get all of the DJ equipment ready. Before they leave, Yellowtail (Sour Cream’s stepfather) comes home. SC and Yellowtail argue about whether music is a viable career, forcing SC to storm off. Thanks to the fight, SC has to stop and use the restroom at Greg Universe’s car wash. While SC is indisposed, his father and Greg’s former manager, Marty, shows up. When he sees that SC is about to put on a show, Marty jumps into action. He changes the venue from a warehouse to the beach, despite Steven’s protests. Marty gives SC all new equipment, more roadies, and a bigger stage. It’s everything SC has dreamed. But just before SC takes the stage, Marty grabs the mic to by the hype man. Sadly, his hype isn’t for SC but for a disgusting soda made from guacamole. SC realizes that the show was never for him and Marty agrees to leave. Before he does, Marty gives Greg an envelope. Supposedly, he is “legally bound” to do so.
Disheartened by his father’s betrayal, SC assumes that Yellowtail has come to take him out to the boat to teach him how to fish. On the contrary, Yellowtail brought all of SC’s old equipment so he can put on a kickass beach party. The night turned out awesome after all. And the envelope? It had a check for ten million dollars. A winning situation all around.
This was a better episode than “Steven Floats.” There was conflict, there was intrigue, there was ten million dollars! Sure, we’ve seen Marty before but this time it’s obvious that SC looks up to his father, even if he doesn’t know that he does. It was also great to show that, even though SC hasn’t been very nice to him, Yellowtail still has his stepson’s back. Family doesn’t always have to be blood relations. Family takes care of family. I hope that SC has more respect for Yellowtail now.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
