Review: Star Wars Resistance “The Triple Dark”

Kaz goes head-to-head with space pirates in an excitingly fun episode of Star Wars Resistance.

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Kaz is beginning to realize that accepting Poe’s mission to uncover the First Order’s spy might keep him apart from his family and friends for a while. He has a memento from the first race he ever won – a trophy that turns out to be made from extremely valuable materials.

While out and about picking up supplies to fix his first ship as a mechanic, Kaz gets into a scuffle with the sleemo he offended during last week’s dart game. As he tries to avoid handing over his precious trophy as payment, he unmasks a plot by space pirates to attack the Colossus. His mechanic client was a spy for the marauders!

Our Take:

Two episodes in and I’m already liking the character dynamics a lot. Maybe even more than Rebels, I think? The fact that Kaz is no mechanic means he’ll have to work even harder to keep up his cover story. Learning from those around him allows the audience to become friends with Kaz as he befriends others in the supporting cast. He’s off to a rough start, it seems, especially when it comes to Tam. She doesn’t even appear to like him as a person, and then you have to factor in that he basically stole the ship she was promised by Yaeger. At this point, Tam is probably the character I’d like to see more of in order to understand what she’s all about and what purpose she’ll play in Resistance. I absolutely loved her and Kaz’s barb-trading where she asks him where he went to school to learn mechanic-ing and he replies that he’s ‘self-taught’.

The more I see of Yaeger, the more I find to like about his character. He’s not the typical teacher/mentor that most young heroes would have to look up to. He’s not Kanaan and Kaz is no Ezra. Yaeger is just an often grouchy mechanic who seems to want no part in the Resistance, accomplice or not. There are so many questions I have about him and his backstory. If he’s so reluctant to get roped into the Resistance, then how are he and Poe Dameron so chummy? Currently, I’m betting that he used to be a member of Poe’s squad but left after a falling out or a mission that ended up costing a lot of lives. But, hear me out… how crazy would it be if Yaeger ended up being the First Order spy? Maybe that’s why he’s so eager to keep Kaz’s mind off spying and onto fixing junky ships. (It might also explain his awful, awful wages.)

I realize there will always be people who nitpick how this show looks in comparison with Rebels, but I am no longer one of them. I think everything from the vivid colors to the varied alien character designs just really works well for the type of show Resistance is becoming. Honestly, two minutes into the first episode and I was hooked entirely, not even thinking about the unique CGI look. And it even adds to the futuristic science fiction atmosphere in many scenes.

The second episode of Star Wars Resistance continues to deliver on the premiere’s promise of flighty fun and spying shenanigans. Though I didn’t find The Triple Dark to be as entertaining to watch as last week’s episode, it still exhibited some traits I really liked, such as the atmospheric animation and Kaz’s dynamic with Yaeger and BB-8. With hints of Captain Phasma’s plan on the horizon, it’s only a matter of time before this Resistance kicks into hyperspeed.
