Our Take

The first episode of the final season of Squidbillies is a very clear message from the producers, “here’s why we replaced Unknown Hinson for Tracy Morgan”. Their take, Adult Swim is a private company, as such, they get to deem what is and isn’t acceptable forms of free speech and Unknown’s actions were why he was pulled as the voice of Early Cuyler. From an aesthetic standpoint, everything looks the same, but I’m sorry, and I love Tracy Morgan, he isn’t the guy here.

Tracy is born and raised in NYC and now lives in Alpine, New Jersey. Home to big-time celebrities like Jay-Z and Beyonce, Chris Rock, and P. Diddy, the affluent neighborhood is one of the most upscale and exclusive neighborhoods in the country housing some of the most well-known. In other words, it’s a far cry from the bowels of Georgia of which is the setting for Squidbillies and as such, it just doesn’t feel the same. Unknown Hinson’s iconic Southern draw screaming at you for a quarter-hour a week is what drew me into Squidbillies and while I love Tracy with all my heart, there’s a very real distinction here that will ultimately see the show limp off into a cartoon graveyard. They would’ve been better off just killing Early altogether.
