REVIEW: SQUIDBILLIES ‘DRONE TO THE BONE’

Spoilers Below

Man, Squidbillies can be pretty good. There are a lot of episodes that are so bat-shit crazy that you can be left a little bit confused as to what you just watched transpire, but when they hit their stride, it is a sight to behold. Come, and let me tell you of the awesomeness.

In this episode of Squidbillies, Rusty is drafted into the US Army by a staff sergeant within an arcade-type-area of a supermarket under the guise of playing “video games” (operating drone attacks) due to his affinity for operating a similar (but far cutesy-er) game. Unbeknownst to Early and Granny, the testing ground for this new drone program is actually across from their property, which they assume to be a fancy new ‘gated community’. In the spirit of “we gone take what we want if you flaunt it in our faces”, Granny and Early break into the “town” which is quickly discovered to be made up of prop houses painted with targets. Rusty is then forced to attack the town (in order to receive money for college), which is being counter-defended by his father and granny. This battle sparks an awesome, and I mean awesome, back-and-forth war montage (complete with original musical backing) that would make any red blooded American proud to watch.

At the end of the day, Rusty can’t pull the trigger on his family, and destroys the last remaining drones on his own – ultimately quitting the Army and being forced to become a dissenter back in the hills of Georgia.

The US Army gets hilariously (and honestly accurately) dogged this entire episode and Granny’s one liners were off the charts funny, resulting in my favorite episode of Squidbillies yet. Unless I have managed to literally pee in my pants during an episode, then you won’t find me dishing out full marks, but this comes as close to brilliance as one might otherwise.  Comedy and satire in beautiful harmony, acted out by hill-billy squid-people.  Brilliant.

There is a time for critique, but today is not that day.
